sd231 Bend, Oregon
Completed in Fall 2009. Two-story, 2,900sf with sweeping views of the Cascade Mountains. This home features our Natural Style Package, with custom upgrades. It was completed in the factory in 4 weeks (including 1 week of quality assurance). All 6 modules were installed onsite in less than 6 hours. Three weeks later the home was move-in ready.
Production Facility
Located in Boise, Idaho, the production facility employs the latest in systems-built technology to create precision-built homes that deliver long-lasting quality and value. In addition to meeting and exceeding applicable building codes, homes are constructed by more than 200 skilled craftspeople in climate controlled factory conditions to insure they meet our exacting standards and pass rigorous, multiple inspections. We build only to the IRC code standard, and unlike many other factories do not mix it in with HUD (mobile) homes. (click to image to expand)
Guest House
This one-of-a-kind 840sf retreat gives visitors a dynamic spatial experience not indicative of its compact layout. Placed at a distance from the main residence, it affords privacy for guests and hosts; it is especially well appointed for a four or five day visit. Guests leave their vehicle and climb a winding path to the dwelling at the edge of a bluff, entering through a node between the major roof forms. The classic Stillwater butterfly roof is employed then offset by a mono pitch roof over the living pavilion, which opens out to the bluffs’ edge beyond. The resort-inspired bathroom has surfaces covered entirely in stone and a no-step shower that opens up to an outdoor private court. The sheltered interior is countered by the breathtaking view, creating a memorable exploration of the relationship between prospect and refuge.

Rural Retreat
The client, a San Francisco-based venture capitalist, invested a great deal of time searching for the perfect rural location on which to build a weekend retreat. Desiring privacy and a reasonable commute, he chose a secluded 40-acre parcel in Sonoma County as a base from which to enjoy the recreational opportunities, fine wine and gourmet dining the area is known for.
Inspired by timeless, rustic weathered barns, the hilltop home near Healdsburg, CA commands a sweeping vista. This allows the expansive living area, master bedroom and guest suite to be oriented in different directions to unique views.
The guest suite is separated from the main house, creating both privacy and an inner courtyard entered beneath a partially covered arbor. Beyond the intimate entry, the living space has been scaled up slightly to include 9’ high folding glass doors and a ceiling that slopes to 14’. Paired columns with glass between, support exposed roof beams; expressing the structure’s skeleton.
The exterior contrasts a palate of recycled, silvered wood planks with large plates of patinated weathering steel, offset by a massive board-formed concrete chimney and translucent, insulated screen walls. The interior employs reclaimed wood with a wax finish on most walls, ceilings and floors. There are no built-in cabinets; they have been replaced instead by eclectic pieces of vintage farmhouse furniture from the client’s collection.
Because of the power and ease of shared screen conferencing, design meetings were scheduled faster and more regularly than traditional in-person meetings, improving the collaboration and expediting the feedback process.

Enduring Design
As savvy homeowners increasingly reject the excesses of the 7000sf McMansion, thoughtful architects rethink and downsize the idea of the ultimate home. Maximizing space and subtracting unnecessary elements resulted in this low maintenance, beautifully proportioned 3500sf home created for a gated community near Seattle, WA.
A graceful entry, our signature butterfly roof-lines, generous use of windows, and soaring ceiling heights achieve a spectacular sense of light and space.

Clients personalize the dwelling with a variety of finish materials such as brick, wide plank floors, and reveal-detail wood paneled ceilings. The airy one-story pavilion houses the living areas, and oversized glass doors open to the terrace and view beyond.
A two-story structure containing five bedrooms, utilities and garage is linked to the pavilion through a short connecting passage. Sustainable materials, contemporary aesthetics, and natural, high quality finishes complete this ideal family residence.
